Stay Safe From The Bad Guys On The Internet

Digital Citizen

Overview‚Äč

Students need to learn how engage in positive, safe, legal and ethical behavior when using technology, including social interactions online or when using networked devices. There are a number of great websites and games to use with the students to help them learn how to stay safe from the bad guys.

Learning Objectives

Students will:

  • Be able to stay safe on the Internet
  • Understand that they should not talk to strangers ever even on the Internet.

Vocabulary

  1. Digital citizen: A digital citizen is a person who develops the skills and knowledge to effectively use the Internet

Pre-planning

  • Go through the Bad Guy Patrol Game from Alberta Canada. The only downside of this game is that you cannot skip around. You have to listen to the introduction, answer the questions and move through the game.

  • Watch the Netzsmart video UYN Princess Puppet Show. This also is a good representation for staying away from the bad guys.

Accommodations

Steps

  1. Before the students begin using the computer talk to them about how important it is to stay safe on the Internet.
  2. Go through the Bad Guys Patrol Game together as a class.
    1. After you have completed the game have a discussion with the students on how to stay safe.
    2. Review the main points of the video.
      • How is staying safe on the Internet different than staying safe when not on the Internet?
      • How can I be a good citizen while on the Internet?
      • How do I stay safe when using the Internet?
  3. Have the students watch the Netzsmart video UYN Princess Puppet Show on their own.

Assessment Options
