Flipgrid is a web based video discussion platform that allows students to create short videos for a variety of educational purposes. These videos are stored within the teacher account and the teacher controls the security settings.  

Flipgrid One is free forever and has all the tools to build a social learning community with unlimited topics and student videos. You can upgrade to Flipgrid Classroom to transform discussions across all your classrooms and throughout your global community. Students use Flipgrid for free and do not need accounts. 

Learning Objectives

Students will:

  • Be able to communicate effectively using the video response player to record themselves sharing information as prompted by the teacher.  
  • Be able to use the video response player to contribute to a discussion topic.
  • Be able to react and respond to recordings of their peers.  

Vocabulary

  1. Grid: A grid in Flipgrid is your classroom community of learners.
  2. Topic:  A topic is questions or themes your students discuss.

Pre-planning

  1. Teachers should familiarize themselves with the Flipgrid website and sign up for a free account. Create your grid and topic based on classroom content or ideas provided. View the Topic Discovery Library for additional ideas and templates.

Accommodations

  • Read and Write for Google Chrome can be used to help students with reading deficiencies as they navigate the Flipgrid website.

Steps

  1. Use one of the following videos or the document guide to introduce Flipgrid to students.
  2. Share your topic with students in one of two ways:
    • Share Flipgrid website link and code for your topic.
    • Share the direct link to your created topic.
  3. Allow students time in class to respond to the topic. Students can produce videos independently or as a group.  This task can also be completed at home with any device that has a camera.

MITECS: Michigan adopted the "ISTE Standards for Students" called MITECS (Michigan Integrated Technology Competencies for Students) in 2018.

CONTENT AREA RESOURCES

ELA

  • Topics that can be provided for video responses may include: Character Reflection, Theme/Main idea, Book Review, Read Aloud, Lesson Reflection, and Persuasive Writing Recordings.

Integrated Arts

  • Filmmaking, song making and drama can be incorporated in any of the topics above to promote creativity and student engagement.

Math

  • Topic ideas:  What is your math fact fluency level and what is your favorite way to study?  

  • Share “Math Talk” and process for solving a given problem/algorithm,

  • Lesson Reflection.

Science

  • Topic ideas for video responses:  Present Data Collection, Weather Forecast, and Lesson Reflection.

Social Studies

  • Students may report research based on projects assigned in class: Black History Month, Public Policy Issues, and Current Events.
