Students understand the importance of giving credit to others for their work. They also realize how to receive credit for their own digital creations.

Students will be directed to an informational article and/or video on different content areas & will be asked to use a note-taking chart to give credit for the author’s work & to restate in their own words. This chart can be used in any content area and for any “research” the student needs to do.

Learning Objectives

Students will:

  • Understand plagiarism, copyright, credit.
  • Be able to know that when using other’s information, they must give credit as well as use it in their own way.  
  • Understand it is important for them to also get credit for their OWN work, and they deserve the same respect.

Vocabulary

  1. Credit: Credit is giving acknowledgement to the person who has created a piece of work.

  2. Plagiarism: Plagiarism is the use of some or all of somebody’s work or ideas, and saying that you created it

  3. Copyright: Copyright is a law that gives permission to the creators to say what others can do with their work.

Pre-planning

  • Pre-planning will include lessons that are taught in content areas.

  • Watch the brief video tutorial from Common Sense Media.

Accommodations

Steps

  1. Teacher assigns informational article/video from content area being used.
  2. Teacher instructs students on how to copy & paste information into the “Note-Taking form” and how words as well as images/videos used need credit to be given to the “author.
  3. Teacher models with students how to put information in their own words and/or to give credit where it is due.
  4. Have the students use this teacher created chart. It can be modified/adapted to any content area. (Create your own Copy by going to File>Make a Copy.

  • Spotlight sharing of work.  
  • Padlets are a great place to share the documents as well.
