Basic Mouse Skills - Mousing Around

Overview

Young keyboarders with their small hands have limited skills when it comes to keyboarding. It is important that they learn how to use a mouse as many of the educational games they play will require mousing skills. There are many games available to students to learn how to use a mouse.

Learning Objectives

  • Be able to use a mouse
  • Be able to single click the mouse
  • Be able to drag and drop objects on the screen

Vocabulary

  • Mousing: Mousing is moving the cursor (mouse) around on the screen.
  • Mouse: A mouse is a hand-held pointing device that works with a computing device. 

Pre-planning

  • We recommend students have access to a computer and mouse.
  • We recommend showing this 2 minute video that has a sing-a-long about the mouse and keyboard from the LearnEnglish Kids site. The lyrics, an activity, and answers to the questions are available to download.

Accommodations

  • Use your settings on your PC or Mac to adjust the accessibility. Go to your System Preferences and choose Accessibility.
  • There are settings to adjust the mouse on your computer. You can make it move faster or slower.
  • You can also set the computer up for alternative input devices to use instead of a mouse. (Joysticks and Trackballs)

Steps

This is a script that you can use with your students:

  1. You are going to learn how to use a computer mouse today.

  2. The Bees and Honey game is a great one to start with as the students just have to hover over the bee and it counts. https://tvokids.com/preschool/games/bees-and-honey (have the students hover the bees first)

  3. Now, you are going to learn how to move the mouse around the computer screen to click on  objects. This is how you make things work on your computer screen.

  4. First let’s click on the mouse buttons. Keep your finger on the left button.

  5. You are going to learn how to do a single click. Gently press down and then release the mouse button.

  6. Now you are going to choose Flowers in the Bees and Honey game https://tvokids.com/preschool/games/bees-and-honey. You are going to click on each of the flowers until you get 10 flowers.

  7. In some programs you drag and drop items. You first click on the object you want to drag, hold the mouse button down, and then drag the object to some location. Now you release the mouse button and the object is in a new location.

  8. Now you are going to learn how to drag something. To drag, press the left mouse button down, and keep it down. Then move the mouse.

  9. This time you are going to choose Honey in the Bees and Honey game.

  10. You are going to drag the bee to each of the flowers. Once you have dragged 10 bees, you will have won the game.

After your students have completed the Bees and Honey game you can have them go to additional sites to practice their skills on this Mousing Activity Page.

The jigsaw puzzle games are a good place to start as they are engaging and your students will quickly learn how to drag and drop the puzzle pieces.

  • The teacher can select one of the games with a jigsaw puzzle. If the student is able to successfully put the puzzle together they have mastered using the mouse. They are using the mouse and drag and drop skills.
