11. Powerful Presentations with Google Slides

Introduction

During this Quest, you will move from the planning stage to creation of a presentation with a group of peers in your classroom, or independently if a partner or group is not available. In this Quest you will be learning about adding a title, page setup, themes, changing the background, and the different slide layout options.

Start by reviewing the I Can Statements and the Vocabulary Section.
Each vocabulary word relates to some features of Google Slides.

We suggest each individual student practice these skills independently, and then together decide on an appropriate design for the group presentation that promotes their topic. If you and your partner or group know how to use each feature listed in the Vocabulary section, then proceed directly to the *Working on Your Group Presentation."


I Can Statements

  • create a Google Slide presentation
  • select a Theme for a presentation

Key Vocabulary:

Slide Background: The slide is initially plain white, but can be changed to a solid color, gradient color fill, a texture or pattern, or a photo or image. Note that a "Theme" you apply may override individual slide backgrounds.

Slide Layout: a layout is the way your text and images are arranged on a slide. Applying a "Theme" may control the layout of the slides.

Slide Master: The slide master stores information about the theme and slide layouts in your presentation, the background, color, fonts, effects, size and position, headers and footers. Changing the master slide can make a change to individual slides or all of the slides in the presentation.

Theme: refers to a design theme that makes it easy to coordinate your PowerPoint presentation with colors, graphics, and fonts that all work together to create a mood for your presentation. Default themes are provided in the program.

You can change the Quiz mode to Match, Test, Learn, Flash Cards, Spell using the selection list at the bottom right of the activity that says "Choose a Study Mode". Direct link to the Quizlet.

Steps

1. Note: If you and your partner or group members are already familiar with how to apply and use each of the slide features listed in the vocabulary section, then take turns demonstrating them to each other before proceeding to the last section titled: Your Group Presentation.

2. If you are new to or unfamiliar with Google Slides, don't be afraid to admit it, this is a great opportunity to learn and go through the sections below to quickly learn to apply each one.

Each individual can create their own new blank presentation to practice these steps before working together on the group one.

1. Title: Once you open your blank presentation you have a Blank Title Slide. Give it a name, such as Q3practice.

2. Setup the size of your presentation. Select the File menu> Page setup> and select 16:9. This works best with projectors and monitors. If it is already selected, then Cancel, otherwise Apply it.

3. Add a new slide - Use the Insert menu and New Slide

4. Theme - Return to the first slide. Themes may be showing on the right-hand side, if not, select Theme on the sub-menu to display them. Scroll down and select one to see what it looks like, use the undo arrow and select a different one. Some Themes will also impact other slides. Use Undo again so that no Theme is applied.

2. Background - Color: Select Background on the sub-menu bar. The first choice is Color. Try Color and Gradient and use Undo and try a different one. If you select the option to apply it to the Theme, it will then make all new slides have the same background. Experiment.

3. Background - Image: Use the Background choice and select Choose image. Then select Google Image Search and type in a word that might apply to your group topic. When you click on an Image you want, select Insert to see it applied to the slide. Consider whether an image in the background will distract from your message, or draw the attention of the audience.

A background image can be applied to the Theme, repeating it on each slide when or if it makes sense.

4. Background Options - Notice that you can upload images or photos, take one with your attached camera if enabled, upload one from one of your Google Drive collection of photos or images ( .gif, .jpg, or .png file types).

It's time to make decisions and apply the different features to your Group Presentation.

Decide and Apply

1. Be sure to add a title to your group presentation

2. Decide if you want to use a Theme for your presentation.

3. Add a subtitle on the first slide.

4. Add additional slides for your Introduction, one for each point to support your topic or message, a conclusion or ending slide, and a final one for questions or feedback and to thank your audience. You can add more later as needed.

4. Each partner or group member will identify the slides they will be responsible for by adding their initials in a corner of the slide or in the speaker notes.

5. From this point on, YOU are responsible for your slides; however, you can easily view how others are doing on their slides as you work through the next Quests.

Completing this Quest

You are working on a project as a team, but you are still responsible for your slides. Make sure you uphold your part of the bargain! Review the I Can Statements before you move on to the next Quest.
