Gold Quest: What is Cloud Computing
Thing 3 is in process of being updated. This will become a series of Gold Quests.
Cloud computing is a term that refers to storing and accessing your data (documents, presentations, bookmarks, etc.) online so that you can access them from any computer in any location. Many web applications now offer a cloud computing service for free. These services give you access to your files without having to use a flash drive, CD, or other tool to store and carry them physically with you. Many of the services will sync your files between the "Cloud" and your computing device, updating them as you make changes.
Throughout the 21 Things 4 Students, you are going to learn about and use many tools that are in the Cloud. Let's learn what the Cloud refers to.
Cloud computing: It is a term that refers to storing and accessing your data (documents, presentations, bookmarks, etc.) online so that you can access them from any computer in any location.
Sync: Sync is short for synchronization. It is a way to let you keep mirror images of your files on your desktop and the Cloud at the same time.
I Can Statements
- store and access data in the Cloud
- define how cloud computing is a benefit
1. Go to Computer Basics: Using the Cloud to learn about cloud computing.
2. Make sure you watch the short video defining the Cloud.
3. Now that you have had a brief introduction to the Cloud, think about some of the ways that using the Cloud is going to benefit you while doing your classwork.
4. Show us what you know by choosing one of two options below.
a. Open up your Word Processing software of choice (e.g. Word, Open Office, Pages) and write a 150 word paragraph about how cloud computing will benefit you when creating and saving your work. Save the document in your File Space.
b. Create a popplet or bubbl.us that defines the benefits of cloud computing when creating and saving your work. Start with the main idea of Cloud computing and branch out with bubbles of the benefits.
5. Check with your teacher to see how you will submit your work for this Quest.
Completing this Quest
When you have finished watching the video, reading about cloud computing and have written your paragraph, you are ready for the next Quest.
