Q3 Order in the Clue Room: Sorting

13. Data Detectives

Sorting towards a solution

It is time to make sense of the sticky note on the folder that said, "What's in Row 10?" and the instructions document in the folder of spreadsheets that said to sort and filter.

Now we just need to learn how to do those two skills.

Step 1. Play the video below for instructions on how to sort alphabetically. The video is specifically on Google Sheets. Those who are using Microsoft Excel, don't fret, the steps are basically the same. This video is for you, PC Quick Tip 1 - Sorting in Excel (0:59 min.).

  • Jot down notes while the video is playing.

Step 2. Go to your 13. Data Detective Notebook that you have saved in your Thing 13 Data Detectives Folder.  On slide 5, Q3 Order in the Clue Room: Sorting, in your own words, write down the steps you need to do to sort columns in a spreadsheet that you learned from the video.

Step 3. Now that you have learned how to sort columns in a spreadsheet, it is time to practice. Recall the two instructions from the 13. DD Spreadsheet Folder that had to do with sorting. Let's see if that helps with finding some clues.

Image from folder instructions: Sort the funko pop spreadsheet alphabetically by column A. Sort the Birthday spreadsheet that you created by the column labeled month.

  • From the 13. DD Spreadsheet Folder, select the Funko Pop Spreadsheet (or use this direct link).
    • If you are a Google User, make a copy and save it in your Thing 13 Data Detectives Folder.
    • If you are a Microsoft User, download a copy and then upload it into your 21T4S Thing 13 Data Detectives Folder.
    • Sort both spreadsheets based on the instructions.
      • Remember, you should have the Birthday Data Collection Spreadsheet in your Thing 13 Data Detectives Folder.

Step 4. Go to your 13. Data Detective Notebook that you have saved in your Thing 13 Data Detectives Folder. Again, on slide 5, reflect on what the post-it note on the folder said. Now that you have the data sorted, what is the answer? Record your findings.
